In Twos

Sometimes we think, if we think on it at all,
that we live in a singular world.
Separate elements, alone in time.
But, most things come in pairs.

Right and left... day and night.
One has no meaning without the other.
There can be no off unless there is on,
to stop, there must be the going.
We judge the bad as diminished values of good....
This world comes in twos.

Like Noah's daunting task,
it is as if creation's blueprint
called for all things to be secretly divided,
thereafter struggling to re-unite,
and fall in line by twos.

As children, we develop an internal "dialogue",
a running conversation with ourselves
that leads us to believe we are balanced, and whole.
But, the heart more easily understands
what our mind must struggle to accept –
that we are incomplete in some fashion,
and that our well being
depends on the missing part.

And so, without conscious reasoning,
we embark on a relentless search
to find the mysterious other half;
to join the severed pieces back together,
and stand in line beside
our lost companion.
For, hearts also come in twos.

It is a solemn occasion. Be thankful.
There are many not as lucky as you,
who journey through this life and never find
the missing part of themselves.
Be happy, for this is above all, a joyous event.
A chance to celebrate your great, good fortune.
For, your hearts that began as two,
have found that they are one.
