Life’s Music

The faithful breath,
the serious rhythms
of the heart pulsate methodically
at the center of life's music.

The tireless thump-thump
of the bass and drum, striding,
ta-thump-thump-ta-thump,
while the screeching strings
wail and cry and the trumpets blare;
underneath, the steady rum-tum-rumble
of the heart continues.

The clock ticks.
Water drip-drop-drips.
Refrigerators hum.

Movements of sound through silence
spring upwards and forwards
with arched back, bring
sensations of cool water flowing
over a body in a stream.
The current of the wild river
beats itself against the stubborn skin –
composing life's music.
