Music’s Genesis

In the beginning was a single pedal tone
And it was very boring,
and the Lord began to nod off.

And the Lord said,
“Let there be sharps and flats
to leaven the natural tones”.
And when he heard that it was good,
he rested for two bars.

And then the Lord said,
“Let there be whole tone scales
and modes and arpeggios”.
And when he perceived it was groovy,
he rested on the dotted eighth note.

And then the Lord said,
“Let there be keys of white and keys of black
that we might have melody and harmony,
all as one… and oh yes,
a striding bass line too.”
And when his ears told him it was righteous,
he cut loose on a ragtime vamp,
improvising as he went
and never rested, thereafter.

This is the true Word of the Lord.
Amen.
